Recently I came across an interesting email from MIT Sloan offering a course on “The Power of Perspective” priced in the thousands of ringgit. At first you might wonder – is simply changing your perspective worth that kind of money? But from my experience as an entrepreneur and business mentor, I’ve come to see just how valuable the right perspective really is.

This week I’m travelling in China, and it gave me a strong reminder of how much perspective matters. On my first visit back in 2010, China looked far behind Malaysia in many ways. Our infrastructure, technology and business practices felt years ahead.

But today I’m amazed at what has changed. China is now seen as at least 5 years ahead of us in many areas. This is a real example of how fast things can move when you have the right perspective and vision for growth.

This dramatic transformation got me thinking about how important perspective is for entrepreneurs. Here are 5 main reasons why the right perspective matters so much:

  1. It lets you see opportunities other people miss. With a new angle, you spot gaps in the market that aren’t obvious to everyone else.
  2. It helps you anticipate future trends. The right perspective gives you the foresight to prepare for what’s coming, instead of only reacting to today.
  3. It leads to more innovative problem solving. Looking at a challenge from a new angle brings creative solutions you wouldn’t have considered before.
  4. It expands what you believe is possible. The right perspective shows you what you can actually achieve, beyond your current limits.
  5. It motivates bold action. When you see the bigger picture, it gives you the confidence to make big moves.

I’ve seen for myself how powerful a shift in perspective can be. One of my Titan entrepreneurs recently grew sales by a few million ringgit a month, just by adopting a new perspective I shared with them about their market position and growth strategy. It completely changed how they saw their business potential.

So how can you actively work on getting a better perspective as an entrepreneur? Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Travel and expose yourself to different cultures and business environments.
  2. Find mentors and advisors who can offer you a new angle.
  3. Read widely, especially outside your own industry.
  4. Attend conferences and workshops to learn from different experts.
  5. Practise looking at your business through your customers’ eyes.
  6. Regularly step back from daily operations to look at the big picture.
  7. Challenge your assumptions and be willing to change your mind.

Remember, your perspective shapes everything – from the opportunities you see to the decisions you make. Investing time and resources into widening your viewpoint isn’t just worth it, it’s essential for any entrepreneur aiming for transformative growth.

I believe this is one of the keys to the success of many RichWorks millionaire entrepreneurs, especially the Titans. And there’s one more key: no matter how high you go, stay humble and remember where you started…
