Don't talk too much with the mouths of the human race. This is the Battery Business Story

Introduction

In the challenging world of business, there are times when we need to pause and look for inspiration from other people's success stories. Today, I would like to share about the extraordinary journey of a Malaysian entrepreneur who has changed the automotive service industry in this country – Azarol Faizi, founder and CEO of Bateriku Group of Companies.

The beginning of Bateriku.com

It all started in 2014. Azarol Faizi, an engineer with experience working in multinational companies like Hyundai, saw a huge opportunity in the automotive industry. At that time, he realized how difficult it is for vehicle owners to get fast and efficient roadside assistance services, especially for vehicle battery problems.

Inspiration from Technology

Inspired by the success of companies such as MyTaxi and Uber, Azarol decided to create a technology platform that can provide on-demand vehicle battery solutions. With only seven people on his team, he launched Bateriku.com – an online platform that offers fast and reliable battery replacement and roadside assistance services.

Building Ecosystems

Over time, Bateriku.com grew into a group of companies consisting of Bateriku (M) Sdn. Bhd., Akademi Bateriku Sdn. Bhd., and BPlaz (M) Sdn. Bhd. Each of these entities plays an important role in forming a comprehensive ecosystem that caters to every aspect of vehicle ownership. Bateriku.com now not only provides battery replacement but also connects vehicle users with roadside assistance, trusted workshops, spare parts market, and additional services.

Harnessing the Gig Economy

One of the success factors of Bateriku.com is the use of the gig economy. By involving highly trained and skilled technicians called BHeros, Bateriku.com is able to provide fast and high quality service to vehicle owners. This not only ensures fast response times, but also creates employment opportunities, contributing to the local economy.

Development and Strategic Cooperation

Through the BPreneur program, Bateriku.com managed to open more than 150 retail outlets or Pitstops throughout the country, including in Sabah and Sarawak. Collaborations with big brands such as Allianz, Etiqa, Socar, and Grab have also expanded Bateriku.com's service offerings and customer base.

Technological advances

Bateriku.com is always investing in technology to improve the customer experience. In 2017, they launched the Bateriku Customer Application that offers a seamless after-sales experience, complementing existing channels such as a 24/7 hotline, web booking, WhatsApp, and inquiries via social media. This digital-first approach is critical in maintaining customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

Various Service Offers

In 2019, Bateriku.com expanded their services by introducing full roadside assistance under BPlaz, including towing services, tire replacement, fuel filling, and car lock services. This diversification makes Bateriku a one-stop solution for all vehicle-related emergencies.

Success and Development

Bateriku.com has successfully served nearly 1.5 million vehicle owners and recorded a revenue of RM95 million in 2023, with double-digit EBITDA and single-digit Profit After Tax (PAT). In 2024, this company is expected to reach an income of RM170 million.

On 1 April, Bateriku.com successfully raised RM10.1 million in funding through a joint investment by VentureTECH and VentureTECH SBI, as part of a RM37 million funding round. Other investors include KWAP and Gobi Partners. This is their second funding round in 10 years of business. The first round of funding is RM10 million in 2022 from the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional.

Commitment to Quality and Training

In January 2023, Bateriku established Akademi Bateriku – a training center recognized by HRDF for a multi-level certification program. This initiative ensures that all technicians are highly skilled, especially in emerging areas such as EV and Hybrid systems, maintaining the company's high service standards.

Bright future

Moving forward, Bateriku.com is ready to continue to grow. The company plans to digitize its three verticals – Battery, Roadside Assistance, and Workshop – into an inclusive automotive digital platform called 'Bazaar.' Additionally, Bateriku is gearing up for an IPO on Bursa Malaysia in 2027, signaling their strong financial health and strategic vision.

Closing

Azarol Faizi's journey with Bateriku.com is a testament to the transformative power of innovation, strategic thinking, and unwavering dedication. His story is an inspiration to SME business owners, showing that with the right vision and execution, it is possible to build a successful business and make a big impact, not only in Malaysia but also internationally.

Call to Action

To all SME business owners out there, take a lesson from Bateriku.com. Focus on customer experience, integrate technology, and constantly improve your service. Never give up, believe in your dreams, and always innovate. Together, we can achieve incredible success.
