Ilmu Hikmah – The Most Valuable Gift from Allah, But How Do We Get It?

Allah’s words in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 269:

“He gives wisdom to whom He wills. And whoever is given wisdom has surely been given much good. And none will take heed except those who have understanding.”

What Does Hikmah Really Mean?

Hikmah is not just about being clever or having a lot of knowledge. Hikmah is wisdom that comes from a clean heart, a calm mind and a soul that is awake to the truth. It is the ability to understand things deeply, to make the right decisions, to stay calm when tested, to say the right thing at the right time, and to act in a balanced way according to the situation.

Hikmah also means a person can see things from a wider angle, more maturely and more fairly. It is the ability to judge something accurately, without rushing and without letting emotions take over.

Examples of People and Situations That Have Hikmah

  • First, Prophet Sulaiman alaihissalam. He was given hikmah in leading and in judging. In the story of the two women fighting over a child, he made an extraordinary decision that revealed who the real mother was. That is hikmah.
  • Second, Luqman al-Hakim. He was not a prophet, but Allah mentioned his name in the Quran because of his wise advice to his son. His words were not long, but they were packed and left a deep impact.
  • Third, Rasulullah SAW. He was the most hikmah of all people. He did not rush to punish, he stayed calm under pressure, and he could handle enemies without hatred. He knew when to be firm and when to be gentle.
  • Fourth, a mother who is redha. In the middle of hardship, she still gives thanks. She does not complain, she does not blame fate. Her actions are calm, patient and full of consideration.
  • Fifth, a leader or entrepreneur who does not panic when tested. Even when challenges keep coming, he can stay calm, find a mature solution and not make reckless decisions.

How Allah Gives Hikmah

Allah says He gives hikmah to whom He wills, but in our lives that gift always comes through certain paths and certain people.

  • First, through a guru, murabbi or mentor. When we learn from the right person, hikmah can flow in through advice, correction and the knowledge he teaches.
  • Second, through life experience. Sometimes hikmah comes after someone has been tested again and again. When he does not give up, he finally starts to understand the meaning behind the test.
  • Third, through reading, tadabbur of the Quran and zikir. When the heart is clean, the Quran will speak to us. The same verse, when read with an honest heart, will open a new view we never understood before.
  • Fourth, through doa. We can ask Allah for hikmah in every sujud. Ask Allah for true understanding, calm in the heart and the ability to make the right decisions.

What We Need to Do to Get Hikmah

  • First, clean the heart of arrogance and stubbornness. Hikmah will not enter a heart that is full of ego.
  • Second, learn to accept advice and correction with an open heart. Someone who cannot be corrected will never get hikmah.
  • Third, sit in majlis ilmu and be around people who are soleh. The atmosphere and the environment also shape wisdom.
  • Fourth, always do muhasabah. Hikmah comes to those who are honest about their own weaknesses and want to change.
  • Fifth, make the Quran your daily guide, not just ritual reading. Read it with a heart that wants to understand and wants to change.

Hikmah Is the Key to Good in This World and the Hereafter

People who have hikmah live calmer lives. Their decisions are more accurate. They do not act in a rush. And most importantly, they become a source of good for others.

Hikmah does not come suddenly. It is a gift, but it is also the result of effort, doa, muhasabah and self-sacrifice.

If we truly want success that is blessed, we must ask Allah to give us hikmah. Because with hikmah, everything in life becomes better, more organised and more meaningful.

May Allah choose us to be among those who receive hikmah and share it with the world.
