Dear Entrepreneurs and Business Owners,

One decision can grow your business — or bring it down.

Imagine you want to create and launch a new product. You put in RM1 million to develop the product, buy the stock, sort out the packaging and market it.

If the product works, it can open up a new income stream and speed up your business growth. But what if it doesn’t sell? What if there is actually no market demand? What if customers see no reason to choose your product? What if your product is no better than what is already in the market?

That RM1 million investment can end up as RM1 million worth of unsold stock.

After years of coaching entrepreneurs at every stage of growth, I have realised that what separates the entrepreneurs who keep growing from those who eventually get stuck is not just intelligence, experience or ambition.

The difference is their ability to anticipate what is coming, to spot the changes already happening, and to make better decisions before committing big resources.

Entrepreneurs who keep growing do not start by asking, “How fast can we launch this product?”

They ask, “What future trend are we responding to? What real customer problem do we want to solve? Is the demand for this product already proven? Why should customers choose us over the options already out there? Can we test the market before investing RM1 million? What is the potential return, and how much are we willing to lose?”

Many business owners make decisions based on excitement, assumptions or confidence alone. They fall in love with their own product before making sure the market will love it too. They invest first and validate later.

When the product does not sell, they blame the marketing team, the sales team, the economy or the customers. But the real problem may have started much earlier — with the quality of the decision made by the founder.

This is my realisation: your business rarely grows beyond the quality of the decisions you make.

The bigger your business, the more expensive every decision becomes. A wrong decision at RM1 million may still be fixable. But the same mistake at RM10 million, RM25 million or RM100 million can hurt your cash flow, weaken the organisation and threaten the whole business.

Entrepreneurs who keep growing are not the ones who never make mistakes. They are the ones who ask better questions, challenge their own assumptions, count the downside, and confirm market demand before making a big commitment.

Before you invest a large amount in your next product, test the market first. Talk to customers. Validate the demand. Study the competition. Test the offer on a smaller scale.

Most importantly, make sure customers are actually willing to pay — not just saying they like your idea.

Do not invest RM1 million just because you believe the product will work. Gather enough evidence to understand why it should work.

One decision can build your business. One decision can also bring it down.

Make sure your next decision is based on market reality, not just your own assumptions.
